TMJ Therapy Denver
Today, TMJ continues to be one of those dental conditions that challenges general dentists and doctors. The broad range of TMJ symptoms that seem to come and go may or may not be linked to a problem within the temporomandibular joint, but off and on symptoms that include jaw pain, neck pain, headaches, facial pain, and tinnitus are telltale symptoms of TMD, especially to an experienced neuromuscular dentist.
If you're suffering from unsolved symptoms that are often seen with a misaligned or imbalanced TMJ, consult with Dr. Berry to not only have your condition diagnosed but to get the relief you've long sought from TMJ therapy. Dr. Berry can also help patients who are seeking alternative treatment due to failed past methods or therapy that didn't provide the best results.
For patients who have yet to find a viable therapy for their TMJ problem, there are a wide variety of TMJ therapy options available...
Avoiding Certain Behaviors
Avoiding things such as biting habits, harmful chewing habits, opening the mouth too wide when laughing or smiling, along with others may provide some relief to patients who are suffering from TMJ symptoms. This allows the jaw to rest.
Of course, behavioral TMJ therapy is more so treating the symptoms and not the root of the problem. Dr. Berry prefers to treat the source of your TMJ symptoms.
Fixed Orthotics
Permanent orthotics work just like a normal orthotic except it is fixed to your teeth. This means that the orthotic is permanent and cannot be removed like a normal bite splint. This obviously increases compliance and is a good way to ensure that we have found the correct bite (occlusion) before we permanently alter your bite through another TMJ therapy such as full mouth reconstruction.
Coronoplasty
Coronoplasty is best for those patients who have a very small amount of misalignment or imbalance with their TMJ. This type of TMJ therapy involves reshaping the enamel on the tops of the teeth so that your bite can be realigned to its ideal position that was provided to you when using the orthotic.
Orthodontic TMJ Therapy
Sometimes moving the teeth will result in a more balanced bite in some patients. If this is the case for you, Dr. Berry will work with an orthodontist to complete the procedure that will involve moving your teeth to achieve the ideal bite.
Full Mouth Reconstruction
Full mouth reconstruction is a "two for one" procedure that not only treats TMJ by permanently putting the jaw in its proper alignment but at the same time also provides patients with a new smile that is nothing less than flawless. Full mouth reconstruction involves use of porcelain veneers and dental crowns.
TMJ Surgery
This should always be a last resort. Some patients who have undergone TMJ surgery are in just as much, if not more pain than when they had the procedure. For others, it was the only way to resolve their TMJ symptoms. Some TMJ surgeries include:
- Arthrocentsis
- Arthroplasty
- Disk Repositioning
- Discectomy
- Articular Eminance Recontouring
- Total TMJ Joint Replacement
Tried and True TMJ Therapy
While alternative therapies for TMJ do exist and are practiced, Dr. Berry wholeheartedly believes that his neuromuscular-dentistry-based methods of TMJ therapy are the most effective, as they have proven to work for hundreds of patients that he has served. If you are suffering from TMJ disorder, it's important that you are aware of the many different available TMJ therapy options that you have, but also note that Dr. Berry's use of a bite splint has proven to be a tested and true method. With use of the K7 and the TENS devices, Dr. Berry is able to find your ideal bite and provide you with a neuromuscular orthotic that will keep your jaw in this position when you close your mouth.
