Snoring In Denver

Snoring can be a big problem. In fact, it can be a deadly problem.

Snoring occurs when the tissues in the soft palate and throat vibrate because the airway is not open enough to allow air to freely travel in and out while the person is breathing. These tissues that cause snoring can be any or all of the following:

• The tongue
• The uvula (the thing that dangles in the back of your mouth)
• The tonsils
• The adenoids
• The soft palate
• Fatty tissue in the throat

Snoring As A Symptom

For some people, snoring is just an embarrassing noise that they make when they sleep, but for many others, snoring is a symptom of sleep apnea, more specifically, obstructive sleep apnea. The snoring sound comes between apneic episodes where the person suffering from sleep apnea actually cannot breathe at all because their airway is blocked by these soft tissues. The Collateral Damage of Snoring

Unless you sleep alone, your snoring is probably affecting someone else more than it appears to be affecting you. Your bed partner is likely getting poor quality sleep because your snoring is keeping them awake at night. This of course can lead to irritability, but people have actually been involved in accidents because they weren’t alert and aware of danger around them, all because their bed partner had untreated snoring.

What To Do If You Snore

If you snore, the first step should be to get tested for sleep apnea. This study can be done at home, or preferably in an accredited sleep center. If sleep apnea is the cause, then your snoring treatment will be based around the treatment for sleep apnea. If your sleep study shows that you do not actually suffer from sleep apnea, then Dr. Berry will discuss your options for snoring treatment.
