Teeth Crowns and Dental Bridges in Denver
Porcelain Crowns
When a tooth is damaged or decayed such that a mere filling or dental bonding would be insufficient to provide enough protection and structural integrity to the tooth to prevent future damage and decay, a dentist will usually opt to place a crown on the tooth. Teeth crowns can be made from a variety of materials, but our Denver dentists usually recommend the use of porcelain teeth crowns. An all-porcelain teeth crown provides the natural aesthetic that you want so that you don’t have the dark line closed to the gum that comes from a teeth crown that also has metal in it. Also, while it might come as a surprise to you, porcelain is actually a very strong, tooth-like material that will last a long time. They can last a lifetime with the proper care.

How Do Porcelain Teeth Crowns Work?
When you visit our Denver dental office for a porcelain tooth crown, the first steps will depend on the reason why you need a tooth crown. We will likely take some digital X-rays to see the extent of the decay or damage to the tooth.
Before Dr. Berry does anything to the tooth, Dr. Kevin or Dr. Kary will gently numb the area with local anesthetic. When you are thoroughly numb, Dr. Berry will then begin removing the damaged/decayed portion of the tooth, careful to preserve as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.
In some cases, Dr. Berry may decide that a dental inlay or onlay is more appropriate than traditional teeth crowns.
It may be necessary to perform a root canal if the decay/damage has reached the tooth’s pulp. This removes any infection within the tooth and prevents future infection and pain. Despite common misconceptions, root canals are relatively painless and are not anything to worry about.
Once the tooth is prepared, we will then take an impression of the tooth that is receiving the tooth crown so that the crown will fit properly when “seated”.
Dr. Berry will carefully note the shade of the surrounding teeth. If the tooth is located in the front of your smile, Dr. Berry will also make sure that the tooth crown matches in opacity toward the edge of the tooth and will match any other unique features of your teeth so that the tooth crown is as inconspicuous as possible.
We will send the impression of your tooth to a dental lab where they will carefully craft the tooth crown to Dr. Berry’s specifications. We usually get porcelain crowns back from the lab in 2 to 3 weeks.
In the meantime, Dr. Berry will place a temporary crown so that you can get on about your daily life. Temporary crowns are not as strong as a permanent crown, so you’ll need to be careful about what you eat and how you chew, but it will get you by until your permanent crown is ready.
The CEREC One-Hour Dental Crown Option
An alternative to a tooth crown made in a lab is to use our CEREC one-hour dental crown machine. With this piece of high-tech, computerized dental equipment, Dr. Berry is able to mill your tooth crown right in our office while you wait. The results are remarkable, but Dr. Berry usually prefers the hand-craftsmanship of a dental lab, especially if the tooth is located in the forward part of the mouth, where the tooth crown will be clearly visible.
Dental Bridges
If, for some reason, you have lost a tooth or have to have one extracted, a dental bridge can replace the missing tooth. While not as ideal as a dental implant, if you’re in the Denver area, and you don’t have the time or money to invest in a dental implant, we can close the gap in your smile with a beautiful dental bridge.
A dental bridge consists of three parts: 2 crowns and the pontic or “dummy tooth” in between.

The two teeth adjoining the space of the missing tooth are prepared as described above to receive the dental bridge. Impressions are taken, and the dental bridge is placed a couple weeks later when it comes back from the dental lab.
